Most people don’t know much about one of our most important organs, our liver. I want to call the liver the master cleansing organ, because it’s the liver that works hard to filter out toxins that our body has ingested. These toxins may include various drugs, chemicals or harmful microorganisms that have entered our bloodstream. The liver also breaks down fats, in order for digestion with the release of bile. When we consume too many greasy or over-processed foods that are filled with various toxic components, we usually feel fatigued and overall, just unwell.
We are exposed to many toxins throughout our lifespan, which are sometimes unavoidable. These may include air pollutants, pain killers, antibiotics and other pharmaceutical drugs, or pesticides, herbicides, artificial sweeteners and colours, and chemically-made additives, which are all found in the foods we eat. The liver filters out these toxins by it’s amazing detoxification and filtration system. When this organ is simply just overworked from an abundance of toxins, it begins to become overstressed and slows down. A fatigued and overworked liver can predispose to various health problems, illnesses and disease.
There are many symptoms of a fatty or overworked liver. Some of these include mood swings, weight gain, dull hair and nails, digestive issues, unstable blood-sugar levels, high blood pressure and fatigue.
A healthy liver is critical to our health and overall well-being. This is why it is so important to cleanse this vital organ and fuel it with the many nutrients it needs. There are many specific herbs and spices that act to cleanse the liver, such as Milk Thistle, dandelion root, and turmeric (to name a few). A good juicing fast once or twice a year, when the seasons change, is fundamental in cleansing our body as well, however small, daily preventive measures are easier and work just fine.
I want to share one of my many liver tonic smoothie/juices that I drink when I know my liver is in need. There are two main ingredients that come to mind when I think of a liver tonic, and those include beets and ginger. There are many reasons why beets are incredibly beneficial to our health, but in regards to the liver, beets help to detoxify, cleanse, and improve the liver’s overall health. See my post Revitalizing and Detoxifying – Juicing with Beets for more information as to why beets are so great. Like beets, ginger helps to support a healthy liver and stimulates it’s performance from it’s enzyme and antioxidant properties.
Quick Liver Tonic
- 6-7 frozen strawberries
- 2 small beets
- half an inch piece of ginger
- 3/4 cup filtered water
Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender, and process until a juice consistency is made.
This drink is full of active enzymes, antioxidants, and vitamins and is so refreshing.
Be kind to your liver!
