Hemp seeds (also known as hemp hearts), should be a staple in every health-conscious household, as they are a nutritional powerhouse. They are nature’s super seeds that contain loads of nutritional content and are a versatile ingredient that can be used for both sweet and savoury dishes. I want to share an in-depth look into hemp seeds, so more people can be aware of the benefits of this healthful seed.
What are Hemp Seeds?
Hemp seeds are considered a superfood. They are derived from the plant Cannabis Sativa, the same plant that Marijuana is extracted from. However, the seeds from this plant contain no THC (the active, mind-altering ingredient found in Marijuana, aka Cannabis). Hemp seeds are a health food product, as they contain high amounts of protein, fibre and essential fatty acids.
Protein – Hemp seeds contain superior, sustainable plant protein. The vegetable protein found within hemp seeds are a complete protein, as they contain all of the essential amino acids, vital for bone and muscle health. This is rare for a plant-based food to have. Hemp seeds are ideal for those who possess a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. The protein structure within hemp seeds are very digestible, as they closely mimic proteins found within our blood. Hemp protein is actually way more digestible than meat, egg, or dairy protein. Hemp seeds are considered a high-protein food, as they contain about 5g of protein in just one tablespoon.
Essential fats – There are an excellent source of essential fatty acids found in hemp seeds. EFAs are crucial for health, as they are the building blocks of a healthy body. More specifically, EFAs are important for a healthy immune system, healthy cellular structure, healthy hair, healthy heart, healthy nails, are more. The EFAs found in hemp seeds are actually a perfect ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, that are ideally suited for our health. A lack in EFAs lead to many detrimental health problems.
Fibre – Hemp seeds contain both insoluble and soluble fibre. Fibre is basically from plant foods, and is the material not able to break down in our stomach. Soluble fibre is dissolved in water, whereas insoluble fibre is not (both types are important for health). Since it cannot be dissolved in water, insoluble fibre passes through our body system as whole fibre, which helps to clean out our digestive tract and bowels. Insoluble fibre is harder to find in many of the processed foods that most people consume on the day-to-day basis. Hemp seeds provide this healthy component, which aids in the prevention of many intestinal disorders.
Hemp seeds also contain vitamin E, A, D, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron and more.
How to Consume Hemp Seeds:
Hemp seeds are excellent to have in the morning, as they are a complete protein. My personal favourite way to eat hemp seeds, is to have one tablespoon in my morning cereal. They have a mild flavour and add a nice soft texture to food.
Add hemp seeds to cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, toast, salads, soups and more. They are great to add to baking and can be ground or blended as well. The possibilities are really endless, just be creative and incorporate hemp seeds into your daily diet.
Hemp seeds are safe to eat for those who have allergies to nuts, lactose, sugar or nuts.
For more concentrated nutritional benefits of hemp, you can try hemp seed oil or hemp protein. In just one teaspoon of hemp oil contains all of the daily essential fatty acid requirements.
The recommended intake of hemp seeds is about 4 tablespoons per day.
